A medium size tractor that could pull a plow with two twelve inch bottoms it came equipped with steel wheels, 4 speed transmission, a belt pulley and a PTO. Rubber tires and a hydraulic lift were optional.

From 1935 to 1938 the tractor was built “unstyled.” No sheetmetal or grills covered the radiator. In addition the first 2000 Model B tractors were equipped with a 4 bolt post to mount the steering to the tractor in front of the radiator. After that the steering post was mounted with 8 bolts.

All John Deere 2 cylinder tractors ran on tractor fuel. Deere incorporated a three way valve in the fuel line that connected a small gas tank to the engine so it could be started on gasoline and then after warming up it was switched to the regular tractor fuel.

The Model B was given a makeover in 1939 with the addition of sheet metal and a grill covering the radiator and became known as “styled.” The engine grew in cubic inches and horsepower and electric starting and lights were added as options. In 1941 the tractor got a 6 speed forward transmission.

Finally in 1947 the Model B was again redesigned. The largest changed was the change to a pressed steel frame and the seat box that housed the battery. The engine was increased in size to 190 cubic inches and electric start was standard equipment.

All told there were a little over 300,000 John Deere Model B tractors built in several different types and for many different types of jobs. In 1952 John Deere introduced the new Model 50 and ended production of the Model B.

If it’s being used on the land they usually have the weight to do the work and are fairly simple to understand and maintain. The cost of an older tractor is often less than the tax alone on a new tractor. So what tractor do you buy?

Choosing the right tractor means you have to take the time to research and determine what you plan to do with it. Will the tractor be used mostly for taking care of land or be a parade queen? A tractor purchased for working the land will have different requirements than one purchased for restoration.

There are thousands of tractors in every size, shape and condition available, but finding what works best for your needs takes a bit of time and a little research.

As a rule, collector tractors generally make poor working tractors and on the other hand, restoring most common tractors may not be worth the hours and dollars needed. Of course that’s not always the case. Determining the type, brand and model of tractor you want can include horsepower, hitch types available, collectability, crops to be tended and many other qualifying factors.

What follows is simply a quick checklist to see if a prospective tractor you’re looking at can make the grade.

1. Look at the tractor - While that may sound strange at first it’s not.

  • Does the tractor look maintained or ignored?
  • Are the nuts, bolts and other connectors accessible or are they covered with grease, mud and corrosion?
  • Are there oil and grease leaks from the fittings?
  • Are there structural cracks in the chassis or other cast components?
  • Are fluids leaking out from around the head gasket?
  • Is the oil clean or burnt, grit filled black or foamy?

    • 2. Start the tractor from cold.

  • How easily does it start?
  • Is the battery being charged?

    • 3. How does the tractor run when hot?

  • After it’s hot shut it down, does it restart easily?

    • 4. Operate the tractor.

  • How well do the brakes work?
  • How well does the clutch work?
  • Does the engine smoke under load or at idle?
  • What noises do you hear from the engine, light ticks or heavy thunking?
  • Do the hydraulics work smoothly or are they noisy or do they bleed down under load?

    • These are just quick checks to use on a prospective tractor but they can tell you an awful lot about the tractor and how its been maintained. There are a lot of good tractors that are covered in muck, grease, mud and dirt, haven’t seen paint in years and altogether don’t look like much but never the less tractors with a lot of miles left in them. These quick checks will tell you if you’ve found a good one or one to pass on.

    So when it comes to buying your first tractor…or even your 10th…take the time to know what you want it to do before pulling out the checkbook.
