The famous John Deere Model B was introduced late 1934 as a 1935 model. A medium size tractor that could pull a plow with two twelve inch bottoms it came equipped with steel wheels, 4 speed transmission, a belt pulley and a PTO. Rubber tires and a hydraulic lift were optional.
From 1935 to 1938 the tractor was built “unstyled.” No sheetmetal or grills covered the radiator. In addition the first 2000 Model B tractors were equipped with a 4 bolt post to mount the steering to the tractor in front of the radiator. After that the steering post was mounted with 8 bolts.
All John Deere 2 cylinder tractors ran on tractor fuel. Deere incorporated a three way valve in the fuel line that connected a small gas tank to the engine so it could be started on gasoline and then after warming up it was switched to the regular tractor fuel.
The Model B was given a makeover in 1939 with the addition of sheet metal and a grill covering the radiator and became known as “styled.” The engine grew in cubic inches and horsepower and electric starting and lights were added as options. In 1941 the tractor got a 6 speed forward transmission.
Finally in 1947 the Model B was again redesigned. The largest changed was the change to a pressed steel frame and the seat box that housed the battery. The engine was increased in size to 190 cubic inches and electric start was standard equipment.
All told there were a little over 300,000 John Deere Model B tractors built in several different types and for many different types of jobs. In 1952 John Deere introduced the new Model 50 and ended production of the Model B.
